What Is Clinical Pastoral Education (Training)?
Where clinical excellence meets whole-person care.
Clinical Pastoral Training (CPE) is an experience-based model of theological and professional formation. Rooted in the work of Anton T. Boisen, it teaches interns to study the “Living Human Document” by reflecting carefully on real-life encounters with patients, clients, families, colleagues and communities.
Interns bring their clinical experiences into structured supervision and peer reflection. They learn to recognize how their personal history, theology, emotional patterns, cultural formation, spiritual discernment and professional behaviour influence the care they provide using the action-reflection model.

The Spiritual Care Association supports professional education, evidence-informed practice, standards, credentialing and board-certification pathways for qualified chaplains.
Capstone University
Capstone designates CPE521–CPE524 at six graduate credits each. Four completed CPE units represent 24 graduate university credits.
CPE completion, academic credit and professional certification are distinct processes. Final registration and transcript requirements are provided during admissions.
